House Wrens are found from Canada to the southern end of South America which makes them the most widespread bird in the Western Hemisphere, though there are several potential or rejected splits. There is also a variety of races of House Wren in the Lesser Antilles that may end up as an additional or several additional species.

There is another area of the Queens County CBC where a team will also likely see Monk Parakeets , Myipsitta monachus , but I am seriously determined to count that bird for my area, Coastal Flushing, a section of northeast Queens, New York, that includes Whitestone, home of one of the loudest invasive bird species in the U.S. And cell towers.

The Tennessee Warbler is a poster child for the boreal forests of Canada and the far northern United States. As autumn arrives and the days get shorter and cooler Tennessee Warblers make their way south to Central America and northern South America, sometimes as far south as Ecuador.

Lovely Cotinga is the flagship species at Pico Bonito, where it is perhaps easier to see than anywhere else within its range. More than 400 species have been recorded at the lodge to date. Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. For reasons that are not quite clear, this species underwent a massive range expansion. In the east, this species can be found along the east coast of Africa, the Nile Valley,and into parts of the middle east and India and southeast Asia.

Right now we’re pretty much a three species town, Ravens with a chance of Hoary Redpolls and a sprinkling of Rock Ptarmigan. (I I smashed the High Arctic Christmas Bird Count record this January 2nd by managing to find all three species here in town. But they have to leave early. Less sun means a journey is ahead.

What turned out to be an epic journey began in Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s Atlantic provinces. Her determination was further fueled by the fact that this year, the status of this species had been changed to Endangered in Nova Scotia. As a result of human interference, four Chimney Swift nestlings had to be rescued.

Typically, at least here in North America, we think of migration as a north-south affair. As summer ends these same birds (and the new year’s broods) then escape the snow and ice and head south for the austral summer, finding warmth, long days and abundant insect life. When I drive a bit north to Lake Cuitzeo during the winter season, all the visiting Peeps ( Least , Western , and Baird’s Sandpipers , as well as Sanderlings ) and Plovers ( Semipalmated and Black-bellied ) connect me with North America’s Arctic shores. I’ve never known quite what to do with the two Cardinal sightings I have had near our church in Morelia, since that species is not supposed to be seen there, or to be migratory, but both sightings occurred in winter. I have seen two Godwit species at Lake Cuitzeo. One is unusual, the other is extraordinary. It means something.
