When I drive a bit north to Lake Cuitzeo during the winter season, all the visiting Peeps ( Least , Western , and Baird’s Sandpipers , as well as Sanderlings ) and Plovers ( Semipalmated and Black-bellied ) connect me with North America’s Arctic shores. Empidonax Flycatchers (7 different species!) Leave those lakes alone!

National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. And now we have the third iteration in Audubon’s guide book history: National Audubon Society Birds of North America. The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count. SPECIES ACCOUNTS.

New Field Guide: Central America

Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama make up Central America. Obviously, many (nearly all) of those birds exist outside that relatively small geographic area, up in to North America and down into South America. In addition, 67 species are listed in a chapter entitled “Marginal, Dubious, and Hypothetical Species.”

Becards

There are 17 species of Becard. Eight occur only in South America, three spill over from there just into Panama, and one reaches from South America through much of Central America. Two reach from South America all the way to southeastern Mexico. Species seen? Great photos achieved?
