About six-and-a-half years ago I had the privilege of watching a young Waved Albatross on the Galapagos island of Española learning how to fly. The sight of the large bird, so awkward on the ground, trying to launch itself with the coaching of an indefatigable parent, was funny, charming, and amazing in its uniqueness.

There aren’t many galleries of weavers on this site, mostly because Corey lives in in Queens and not Johannesburg or Mombasa (or Cape Town, where he could also add some albatrosses to his year-lists).

Be warned, The Atlas of Birds is not a map book, though it does contain maps, lovely orange and purple and green bird distribution maps. It is not an encyclopedia, though it does summarize research, explain basic concepts, and ends with a section on bird statistics. Intriguing, isn’t it?

Honestly, it amazes me I have any time to bird at all. One of my most cherished birding sightings in Uganda was seeing a distant male hornbill land by a walled up hole in a tree and feed its mate. The Oriental Pied Hornbills are pretty special, as they represent a recolonization of Singapore of this family. Okay it is.

The Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Florida was a nice break from winter though the blizzard back home forced me to drive back to New York adding birds seen on the road and at rest stops along the way. This association belies the advanced and highly sophisticated adaptations the family has evolved for a life of wandering, hunting and, yes, piracy on the high seas.
