Flamingos have been reported to abandon their nesting sites even when mining was initiated after the establishment of nesting colonies when the birds were expected to be engaged in a breeding attempt and were less likely to leave the colonies. The Andean Flamingo is now protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

I first noticed the bird as it flew up from the ground and into the tree. The wasps concentrated their attack around the bird’s head focusing on the bare skin of the face and around the eye. The bird scraped at its face which must have taken many stings, but eventually most of the wasps gave up and abandoned the nest.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). The Brown Pelican is Louisiana’s state bird. Pelicans are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Abandoned fishing line also threatens pelicans along with many marine animals. The series of birding workshops and meetings continued across the map, through Ulcinj, Montenegro, then Samobor, Croatia and Stip (described here ), North Macedonia, leading to Brussels, the unofficial capital of EU. The road was new, the only sign of the recent times were bullet holes in a few abandoned houses, but that was a rare sight.
