In 2017 the arrival of the Magpie Geese warned us of the high rainfall ahead and then they bred in the area. The Magpie Geese bred again in the Broome area during 2018. We continue to bird-watch from the bitumen and rain continues to fall across the north of Australia.

Most serious bird photographers dislike taking pictures of birds wearing rings (or what on the other side of the Atlantic you call bands). I can sympathise, as a shiny new ring, clamped to a bird’s leg, rarely enhances its portrait. The information I received didn’t indicate the age of the bird.

Over the last ten years my average first phoebe has been the 22nd of March, meaning that this year’s bird was five days earlier than average and nearly two weeks earlier than last year’s. In the last ten years I have seen my first phoebe of the year on dates ranging from a 12 March (2017) to a relatively late 31 March (2010).

Within 140 ac / 60 ha of Rancho Naturalista’s Reserve, there are 500 bird species – or 55% of the nation’s total! While I already visited Costa Rica once, I do not feel overly-confident with its birds. And Verbena attracts another specialty bird and a regional endemic (from Honduras to Panama), the Snowcap.

In September of 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by two powerful hurricanes: it was grazed by Irma and then clobbered by Maria, a Category 4 storm that cut a devastating swath across the island. Immediately after hurricanes, surviving birds appear to wander in an effort to find any remaining food supplies and habitat.

Already many birds have arrived and no doubt many are thinking of breeding. There were a lot of birds on the move and there were small flocks of Glossy Ibis crossing the highway as we drove. Hopefully they will consider breeding in the area like they did in 2017 when the land was also flooded for an extended period of time.

The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.

September 2017, Cerrado, Brazil. The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret.

The Eurasian Wryneck is the woodpecker that doesn’t look like a woodpecker, the bird with the portmanteau name that is also a medical condition (and which may remind some people of a Nora Ephron essay). They are slim and small-headed birds and their bills are fine, not strong and dynamic.

Following on from our very wet start to 2018 it was no great surprise that we should encounter a Pied Heron around Broome on our return from our trip to more southern areas of Western Australia. Pied Herons are a very small bird and having the two species side by side helps to demonstrate that! White-necked Herons and Pied Herons.

So many birds of white and gray touched with black. So many immature birds utilizing a palette of brown and ecru, burnt umber, white and black.
