In 2017 the arrival of the Magpie Geese warned us of the high rainfall ahead and then they bred in the area. The Magpie Geese bred again in the Broome area during 2018. In the past, when we have had a lot of rainfall in the Broome area during our wet season we have had the arrival of high numbers of Magpie Geese.

In 2017 we found a lone Pied Heron that had wandered south and then in 2018 more Pied Herons arrived after a decent amount of rain and included a rufous morph bird amongst the flock. However, birds that would not normally be local have arrived from the north following all of the wet weather.

In the last ten years I have seen my first phoebe of the year on dates ranging from a 12 March (2017) to a relatively late 31 March (2010). 2018 – 30 March. 2017 – 12 March. And was it late or early? Though it took me until today to see my first migratory phoebe I did see one in Queens in January at Mt. 2019 – 17 March.

314 – Sooty Shearwater , 13 May 2017: Yes! 315 – Western Tanager , 25 November 2017: I’ve been predicting one of these since 2010 and it finally came true a mere seven years later. . The best part was how this bird hung around until 2018 so I got to count it on two year lists for Queens! (2 1 out of 2!).

Focused on watching the eagle, I am deaf and blind to anything else, but Kostas warns me of the honking sounds made by Common Cranes , 18 of them in flight, then 7, plus 6 more, 31 cranes in total and my species #399 for 2017! The solution? The Kerkini Lake.

After being ringed my godwit (EY70 137) wasn’t seen again until 1 July 2017, when it was reported from Aldeburgh Town Marshes, not far from where it was first ringed. Once again the bird disappeared, or at least wasn’t reported, until it was noted at Titchwell RSPB Reserve on the North Norfolk coast on 10 July 2018.

In 2017, my neighborhood, Aldea de Santa Fe, began a Juniper Titmouse Nesting Box Project in collaboration with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s NestWatch Program. A total of 79 fledged, which beat our 2017 count of 52. A busy bird, it’s skilled at acrobatics as it reaches for piñon nuts or hops around the trees outside my window.

In September of 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by two powerful hurricanes: it was grazed by Irma and then clobbered by Maria, a Category 4 storm that cut a devastating swath across the island. There have been two counts since Maria: on December 17, 2017, and December 16, 2018. The 2018 CBC tallied 2,492 birds of 87 species.
