Best Bird of the Year 2014

2014 has been a good year for us at 10,000 Birds. Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. Great Gray Owl: Seeing the Ghost

There are birds more prized by North American birders than the Great Gray Owl , but not many*. Like many cold-weather creatures, the Great Gray Owl can to some extent trade altitude for latitude. We made our way to the spot that the owl had, according to our guides, last been seen. The owl wasn’t there.

Persistence Pays Off For Burrowing Owls

As I opined in my post back in 2010 (and continue to preach) the Western Burrowing Owl needs a conservation plan. A pair of Burrowing Owls fledged six young! After all, the Western Burrowing Owl is listed as “ Climate Endangered ” by the Audubon Society. In the summer of 2015 our investment paid off.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of March 2014)

Corey had quite a few species from which to choose for his Best Bird of the Weekend but he couldn’t resist deciding on the Snowy Owl he watched and digiscoped at Tiana Beach in Suffolk County on Saturday. He wanted to tell me all about it, which earns the robin Best Bird of the Weekend honors.
