I could have chosen any of the four Snowy Owls I saw this weekend as myBest Bird of the Weekend but I decided that I preferred a Purple Sandpiper at Breezy Point, Queens, (pictured above) mostly because it was feeding on a jetty while waves crashed over it. Of course both Mike and I were out and about spotting some birds this weekend.

The most exciting part of 2013 was the insane numbers of Snowy Owls that irrupted to the eastern and midwestern United States. Not only that, but I learned that Snowy Owls can fly ! Sam Adams has been brewing Cold Snap as a late winter seasonal since 2014, but a packaging redesign of this year’s version places a ski-masked owl on the label. The owl has ear tufts, but besides that fieldmark, I’m afraid this week’s bird is probably too stylized for a positive identification.

Since then, we have seen a marvellous recovery, with an estimate of 123 in 2012, 145 in 2013, 165 in 2014, 197 in 2015 and now in 2016, around 232 Great Bustards roam the wilds of Germany, nearly doubling their number within just a handful of years!
