Yes, 2011 was a great year for birding the Triangle. With large numbers of shorebirds present, the falcons came. There was a Peregrine Falcon hanging around the back arms of the lake all season, scaring up the birds right when you thought you had a Western Sandpiper nailed down. Nothing unexpected.

This explains why, if you are looking at the list of plates in the Eastern guide, the “South Florida” subspecies of Red-shouldered Hawk and the “Florida” subspecies of Red-tailed Hawk are near the end of the guide and not with the other plates in the Species Accounts, and why Aplomado Falcon is the very last species in the Western guide.

In 2011, I acquired a pair of Swarovski 8×30 CL Companion. Then, a Saker Falcon in the autumn fogs: CLs true colours allowed me to scratch off the chance of it being a young Peregrine. That is when I went back to 8x30s. And stayed with them for good.

When you review the system, it makes perfect sense: falcons are placed with hawks, nightjars are next to owls, and grebes are close to ducks, rather than separated from them by quail and grouse. Then again, try explaining to a new birder why falcons come after woodpeckers and before parrots!

The maintenance man declared that his father was a falconer, and that he would take her home so he could care for her. Finally, the decision was made to release her in the summer of 2011. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. The driver took her to a local nature center.

Within 15 minutes the Gyrfalcon flew in.
