Those bigger birds of prey command respect, but it’s not like falcons are unknown. Even outside of Atlanta , Peregrine Falcons spend their breeding seasons smiling for the ( web ) camera from atop edifices all across the country. Participation is so easy, you may have already been a part of the proceedings!

Once upon a time in Bojcinska Forest

10,000 Birds

Also, there was a Black Kite awaiting us, as well as one Red-footed Falcon sitting on a dead oak branch. Then in 2011 the foresters planted wheat, and after deep ploughing wheat was left to rot in the ground, with acorns left to sprout. Photo by Surcin Municipality. We entered an area that was clear-cut in 2010.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of April 2011)

10,000 Birds

For those of you playing along at home, this gives me 17 new ABA birds for a total of 467 as of May 1, 2011. On the other hand, a woefully brief glimpse of a Hook-billed Kite at Bentsen State Park was all it took to move it from my world list to my ABA list.

10,000 Birds

The best birds of my weekend were Seahawks, Eagles, Falcons, Cardinals, And Ravens. Mine was fun and footballtastic. In fact, a game is on even as I write this, which means I’ve got no time for idle banter. Am I the only one here excited about the return of NFL football? Corey had a hard time choosing his best bird of the weekend.

Swainson’s Hawks in Plumas County

10,000 Birds

The last time I visited Portola was in the summer of 2011 when the Swainson’s Hawks ( Buteo swainsoni ) were nesting there. From Canada, this migration is more than 10,000 km each way, a distance second among raptors only to that of the Arctic Peregrine Falcon 1. Click on photos for full sized images. But that is another story.
