Swainson’s Hawks in Plumas County

The last time I visited Portola was in the summer of 2011 when the Swainson’s Hawks ( Buteo swainsoni ) were nesting there. From Canada, this migration is more than 10,000 km each way, a distance second among raptors only to that of the Arctic Peregrine Falcon 1. Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. Finally, the decision was made to release her in the summer of 2011. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.
