Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. Finally, the decision was made to release her in the summer of 2011. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

The last time I visited Portola was in the summer of 2011 when the Swainson’s Hawks ( Buteo swainsoni ) were nesting there. Rock & Rawhide has been working with the city facilities to help increase awareness and adoption rates since their founding in late 2011. From February 25 through the end of March, the adoption fee will be just $20 for cats and rabbits, and $50 for dogs.

He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. Over the years Jethro approached rabbits as if they should be his friends, but they usually fled. the Spring 2011 issue of YES! Jethro and the Bunny. Jethro the dog. In 2011 their population was estimated at over 3,000 individuals, increasing steadily at 5-8% every year. Rabbits were introduced to the island by guano miners, which turned the previously verdant island into a giant sand dune; almost all vegetation was wiped out.

Once you start down such a rabbit-hole it is difficult to stop the plunge into full on data-nerd mode. The New Yorker in me likes that the world high counts of Black Scoter , Surf Scoter , and White-winged Scoter were all made off Montauk Point in January and February of 2011. Who has seen the most Green Herons at one time?
