Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is here again!

10,000 Birds

This pair of birds, which we presume to be the exact same pair, has been laying eggs in this area since 2008. There are numerous species of raptors around Broome including Black Kites and Whistling Kites. Meanwhile, the other pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along Cable Beach have begun to breed as well.

(In Intriguingly, there are far more Bald Ibises in captivity than there are in the wild, for this is a bird that breeds readily in confinement. Bald Ibises are curious birds, for they are happy breeding in close proximity to man.

It is not unusual for only one Pied Oystercatcher chick to survive throughout the whole breeding season despite in excess of sixty eggs being laid by sixteen pairs.
