I also watched, but failed to get pictures of, the same young bird being fed by two different male House Sparrows. These particular birds were in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, but the same story is taking place all over the world right now, as few species have successfully adapted to as many locations as the House Sparrow.

This bird “040″ had been banded at about 5 weeks old in 2005 and given a tag as an adult in 2008 within Centennial Park. Birding Australia surveys White Ibis' You may even see a tagged ibis, like we did on our trip to Sydney last year.

This particular nest site is the furthest back from the beach during this time period and the individually marked male Pied Oystercatcher “A1” has been attempting to breed here since 2008. You will note that the footprints are pretty large for a small bird, but they appear to hatch out ready for walking.

My latest addition, a Parasitic Jaeger off the coast, finally got me to my 289th bird, well over a year since I got my 279th. The first time I did this I accidentally added twelve birds to my list before reviewing it. I must do better!

Over the last ten years my average first phoebe has been the 21st of March, meaning that this bird was a full nine days earlier than average and beat last year’s first phoebe by six days. Early first phoebe of the year is good but the predicted nor’easter might make it tough for early arriving birds to survive. 2008 – 21 March.
