Despite more than 50 kite, hawk, eagle, and falcon species on the list, nope, we don’t see raptors all that often! That’s because most are forest-based species and are naturally rare. I didn’t even include owls in the 50 plus list species of raptors. There’s never enough time to see 900 species of birds.

This first birding vignette is actually from just before the weekend, when I was at Alley Pond Park on a day that I was miraculously released from work a tiny bit early and was hoping to find a Yellow-throated Warbler but settled for a Swamp Sparrow by Little Alley Pond. Besides, suffering brings birds, right? How exciting.

What a marvelous sight my seventh goose (and 313th species) for Queens was! After all, I had to suffer through it, why shouldn’t you? Greater White-fronted Goose at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens. It fed nonchalantly as I digiscoped it to my heart’s content. This is an ugly location.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. The final large petrel species is another gadfly petrel, albeit a much larger one than the Cook’s Petrel.

Groups of Cape Turtle Doves feeding on the grass were occasionally joined by a nervous and much larger Rameron Pigeon, and Southern Grey-headed Sparrows and a single Bokmakierie hoped around as well. Above the gardens a wheedling just fledged Gymnogene begged fro food from its long suffering parent.

For example, we all know that many species had their scientific names changed with lots of familiar genera swapped out.
