Getting a Leg Up

Like many modern-day photographic birders, I have built up a huge backlog of photos on my long-suffering laptop. An unusually light morph Red-tailed Hawk Savannah Sparrow And while I do hope to soon take some new photos to share with you all, I hope these images, from early 2022, will do — while I still have a leg up.

The day started out with some typical monsoon-season cloudiness, so my first photos suffered a bit from low lighting. Black-chested Sparrow is one of Paso Ancho’s flagship species. It wasn’t my fault; the Sparrow came to me. Striped-headed Sparrows and Streak-backed Orioles seemed to be everywhere.

Though it was pretty warm for an October morning when I spotted this bird at Fort Tilden, Queens, it was fluffed up as if it was suffering from extreme cold. Maybe it was trying to be a big tough guy considering the volume of sparrows in the vicinity of where it was foraging?
