In birding circles, Costa Rica is better known for protected areas, quetzal tours, and glittering displays of hummingbirds than the things that fly in urban spots. The visual highlight came in the form of a mixed flock of swifts that foraged low, right over treetops to take advantage of some hidden insect hatch. That makes sense.

This is a cruise like no other, full of scientific lectures, over forty guides spread out on deck, bird-themed parties, and a lights-off mandate to protect birds at night. I learned of the trip right as it had been delayed and made a vow that I would be on that ship. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013.

Situated well off the beaten track and at the end of long, bumpy roads, Cangreja National Park is one of the less frequently visited protected areas in Costa Rica. One of these uber cool birds responded straight away to a recording of its song and then flew in to call from a typical potoo perch, right at the tip top of a dead snag.

This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. We gave Manoj twice the usual and well-earned tip, promising to recommend him to other birders. Promise fulfilled.

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. Dubovacki Rit (Dubovac Wetland) is a part of the Labudovo okno Ramsar Wetland and protected within the Deliblato Sands Reserve. To reach the western section, turn right at the first cross junction (coming from the direction of the town of Kovin) and just follow the street until you climb the levee.
