While it may be the first comprehensive field guide to the birds of Central America, it is still big and uncomfortably hefty to carry around, and while illustrations are beautiful, the colours are somewhat washed out.

I found the opportunity to chip away at my county list this weekend, filling an odd Blue-winged Teal -shaped hole while enjoying an array of snappy waterfowl.

According to the winery, the grapes are hand-picked, chilled, and pressed, with the must undergoing a slow, natural fermentation. The grapes used in the Curator come from mostly old-vine plantings dating to the 1950s and ‘60s, with the 2016 edition comprising a blend of three parts Chenin Blanc and one part each of Chardonnay and Viognier.

Before I had a clue what I was doing, I encompassed the Danube backwaters into the reserve borders that I drew on transparent paper pressed against a street map of the city. Fascinated with New York’s Jamaica Bay, I started dreaming about creating a similar wetland reserve on the Danube inside Belgrade, the very area I explored.

Although it might not occur in the high elevations nor so much in dry forest, you would be hard pressed to not see this long-tailed bird in other places. Also known as the Finch’s Conure, this bright green bird with red and yellow highlights is common in many parts of the country. Birding in a local park? Crimson-fronteds fly into view.

The guides bore the Audubon Society name, were published by Knopf and distributed by Random House, but they were actually conceived and produced by an outfit called Chanticleer Press and they became a publishing sensation.
