Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 3)

Most likely, both parties are right. The researchers speculate that this is because of the contrast against the green canopy background – an explanation that seems a bit spurious to me if applied to captive birds. Given the small size of the owl (23-25 cm), the eBird characterization as a medium-sized owl is also a bit strange.

Birding Heligoland in Early September

My chance materialized in September this year when I spent a month volunteering at the “Vogelwarte Helgoland”, the bird observatory on the island that is part of the Institute of Avian Research. This time was invariably spent birding on the island (surprisingly…). The observatory recorded over 500 individuals on the island in total.
