That last little bit is also why we call it “Turkey Day”! The Near Threatened Black Guan.

There were also Collared Lories , not only a species endemic to Fiji but a genus, as well as Polynesian Trillers , Collared Kingfishers and Pacific Swallows. The species replaces the common Wattled Honeyeater that can be found across the rest of Fiji’s islands, as well as the rest of Polynesia.

The Trinidad Motmot is the only endemic species on the island. In addition to the species mentioned before, it is easy to have incredible looks at Red-crowned Woodpeckers , Barred Antshrikes , and Rufous-vented Chachalacas as they frequently are attracted to the fruit feeders. Much more exciting was the Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot that shot past, followed, on the rather slippery path to the caves, by several Rufous-winged Philentomas. This species was a new species and genus for me, and a particularly attractive one that was a pleasure to watch as we wandered down the slippery walkway to the cave entrance.

On a quick browse, here are some facts I learned: Melanin helps to resist bacteria that attack feathers; most parrots are left-footed and this is associated with problem-solving; some birds nest in two different places in the same year. 5 new species in the first hour, with a Olive-backed Sunbird, Helmeted Friarbird , a Varied Triller, White-breasted Cuckoo-shrike and the Australasian Figbird, and we hadn’t even got out of the park yet! At the end of the day, 38 species were found, of which 19 species were new to the year list as well as lifers!

The most common species are two types of honeyeater, the New Holland Honeyeater , a small black white and yellow species, and the larger Little Wattlebird. This noisy species is often heard throughout the park. The other common small species is the Red-browed Firetail , a compact but very attractive finch.

I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area. Foxes were introduced to Australia in 1855 for hunting and have established themselves far and wide. The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. I mentioned recently about the arrival of the Black-tailed Native-hens at Bilyuin Pool this year, but of course there were many other species of birds to enjoy. Brown Falcons , a Brown Goshawk, Wedge-tailed Eagles and also a Nankeen Kestrel hunted in the general area of the pool and were seen regularly during the day. Pallid Cuckoo.

Not every huge white bird was a parrot though, and the lake also had a Great Egret among the Australian Grebes , Eurasian Coots and Dusky Moorhens. Alas this was not to be, and this species remains one of my nemesis birds. One of Australia’s prettiest parrots, the Crimson Rosella. Less pleasing were the ducks.
