They do not look or act much like any other birds (my photo above shows a Speckled Mousebird , Colius striatus , in Nairobi, Kenya). They were once a widespread and diverse group, however, with many fossils known from what are now North America and Europe. The six living species are all found in Sub-Saharan Africa.

By the time this post publishes, I’ll be on an airplane heading back to the United States following a truly remarkable two week visit to Uganda as part of a group of western birders visiting there to promote the inaugural African Birding Expo. In the relatively brief period, my group had something on the order of 450 species.

I remember the guide on my first Kenyan birding safari remarking that “birding groups always see far more mammals than those who come just to see animals. One of my most memorable outings was a night-time game drive in Kenya when we saw an aardvark and a zorilla, so we ticked off both the first mammal in the field guide’s index, and the last.

Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa are heavily eBirded because Americans regularly visit. As this is a roost site, the best time to take this journey is also the hottest part of the day and with the difficulty of slogging through the mud with caked boots, I contemplated telling my group to continue without me.

Only recently was it discovered that one group, which breeds on the Shetland Islands, flies across the Atlantic to winter off the coast of Ecuador – ten thousand miles away from its cousins who breed in Scandanavia and western Russia. Once it was thought that all Red-necked Phalaropes migrated overland to the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.
