We were able to spend hours sitting right in amongst super-groups of 500-600 Geladas that just carried on with their daily business in total oblivion to our presence. The basic Gelada social unit is a harem (or unimale group) made up of a dominant male and several females (1-12), their young and sometimes subordinate males.

When zoo keepers saw that the baby was not eating and having trouble gaining weight, they made the decision to hand-raise him. The new cub was born at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens to a mother who wasn’t able to care for him. Now, at a little more than two pounds, the cub is eating well, getting stronger and eagerly exploring his new home.

A group of us gathered to release her near the spot where she was found. She taught them how to hunt, and when they were released in the fall she stayed on her perch, dozing in the sun. The grand old bird became a surrogate mother, and raised them herself. She deserved her freedom. She deserved to retire in comfort and luxury.

From Hiro, we learn how Northern Pygmy Owls are “rule breakers,” not incubating eggs till all are hatched and then raising owlets that mature at the same rate even though the eggs were laid asynchronously (as most owl eggs are). They are also hunted. They roost and hunt, at night (mostly) when we can’t see them.

eBird gives the Indigo Flycatcher a very positive review, calling it a “beautiful little gem of a flycatcher” Apparently, Indigo Flycatchers mainly hunt in groups, as described here. Must have been a camera fault. The Latin species name of the Penan Bulbul is ruficrissus.

A big moon gives enough light for the gulls to hunt by, so the shearwaters seldom come onto land while the full moon is up. The long shifts before swapping duties reduce the number of times that the birds have to run the gauntlet of the gulls and increase their chances of succesfully raising the chick to the age of abandonment.
