Munkajarra Wetlands is always a good location for the various duck species and you can expect to observe Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Wandering Whistling-Ducks , Pacific Black Ducks , Hardheads , Grey Teal and sometimes Radjah Shelducks and Pink-eared Ducks. After spending Christmas Day birding around Broome and observing 92 species we spent the week making a mental note of what bird species were where. We managed to not observe Straw-necked Ibis or Glossy Ibis all day, but had seen both species a week ago! Royal Spoonbill and Australian Pelicans. Magpie Geese.

By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species. What to say?

We had hoped to add a few more bird species at the Poo Ponds. The expected Australian Pelicans were there and a handful of Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Eurasian Coot , Masked Lapwings and an Olive-backed Oriole was calling continuously. Magpie Geese enjoying the flooded plains. We had a list of 92 bird species for the day.

The birdlife also varied from last year, although some species remained the same. As we walked from the car park to the bird hide we noticed a family of Magpie Geese on the edge of the billabong. Family of Magpie Geese. Australian Pelicans and crocodile. There were a lot less Green Pygmy Geese than last year.

There are no longer any Green Pygmy-geese , but there are over one thousand Magpie Geese. In fact there are so many Magpie Geese it does make it hard to establish what else is present. Magpie Geese. As always, I was the first to the platform and in the light northwest wind and under a full moon I sipped my coffee and willed birds to make some noise so I could start checking off species. Eventually, an Eastern Towhee che-winked and I had my first species for the day. The moon was impressive as it sank down to the horizon.

One lake has had a lone Australian Pelican in for several weeks and in the last few weeks there has been the arrival of Magpie Geese and numerous Radjah Shelducks. Australian Pelican. Australasian Darter and Green Pygmy-geese. All three species of Ibis are now present due to the land drying out.

There were numerous Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks on the bank with Yellow Chats running among them to drink. Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks. It is a popular fishing spot for Australian Pelicans , Little Pied Cormorants and Little Black Cormorants. Due to the extreme heat many of the Magpie Geese were to be found in the shade of the mango trees. Magpie Geese. Birds fishing at Ivanhoe’s Crossing. The birds have been warned! Warning sign.

In early August this year, I saw 77 species here (69 on the lake, plus 8 more in the surrounding areas) but barely more than a thousand individuals. At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans. These two were only the first of several I saw.

As well as being an excellent location to try the local variants of curry (bunny chow is not a curry with rabbit but a curry served in a hollowed out bread loaf – better than it sounds) it’s a good place to pick up a few coastal species. The first stop, Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge in central Oregon is without a doubt one of the most important stop overs for migrating birds on the west coats, no matter the species. It was mixed in with the American White Pelican, in the photo above. One big surprise for me was a single Trumpeter Swan , complete with neck collar.

The driveway also showed up some large, floppy Pheasant Coucals (there is no word that applies to this species better than floppy, they remind me of my parents’ cocker spaniel) and some Whistling Kites circling over a small (managed) bushfire, and some White-faced Herons. This was certainly a more leisurely view!

Located about 20 miles from Lakeview, Oregon, and sitting at an elevation of 5100 feet, this 208 acre lake is home to many species of fish, including Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. The first was the presence of 10-12 American White Pelicans. Lets see what fun species I can find over there? It was good to be back!

Magpie Geese and Great Egret -Mutton Hole wetlands. The flocks of these large birds were mostly close to the highway in the dry grass feeding and the Sarus Cranes were fewer than Brolga and often mixed among them, so you had to check each flock for both species. Wetland in Karumba.

The Purple Swamp-hen ( Porphyrio porphyrio ) I turned south, walking past large groups of picnickers which were being patrolled by Australian White Ibis , one of the species of ibis also known as the Sacred Ibis. Rounding off the waterbirds were Australian Pelicans, Eurasian Coots , the iconic Black Swans and feral geese.
