I’m talking, of course, about “my” flock of American White Pelicans. American White Pelicans spend their winter months along the Gulf states, California, parts of Arizona, and Mexico down into Central America. No matter how many times I see them, this particular species remains breathtaking.

Kerkini in Winter

Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. Red-breasted Geese do turn up at Kerkini regularly, and one year I watched a Red-breast mixed in with the Lessers. Perhaps they do occasionally, but not when I’ve seen them.

The Lake of Beasts: Kerkini, Greece

Birdwise, it turned out to be a good one and my year list was almost 400 species long, which made me happy… almost. Nikos said: “I may have about an hour before breakfast and can take you to see the geese.”. Kostas Papadopoulos observing Lesser White-fronted Geese at Kerkini. Black-winged Stilt near and on the highway There are still over forty species of birds to be found along the highway across Roebuck Plains, but the tall vegetation can be problematic. There are several Swamp Harriers that upset the birds and then you do find there are more species present than are initially visible.

Floodwaters receding across Roebuck Plains

With the extent of the tall vegetation many species have been able to breed and hide for many months and now they are becoming more visible from the highway. There is ample food for many species and you can clearly see the small fish around the culverts. There are also a lot more Red-kneed Dotterels and Black-fronted Dotterels visible.
