With binoculars around my neck, I am leaving home, wondering which will be the first species on my year list. Obviously, I am talking of Feral Pigeons (also called city, town or street pigeons). The scientific name of the Feral Pigeon is Columba livia domestica and that last world tells the story. New Year’s Day 2014.

Counting Feral Muscovy Ducks in Florida

I wasn’t having any luck at all though I was enjoying the typical assortment of wetland species that make we New York birders a bit jealous of our southern compatriots. Great News! Feral Cats to be Removed from Plumb Beach, Brooklyn!

The National Park Service is finally going to remove the feral cat colony from Plumb Beach, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Signs like the one above went up late last week. As is only to be expected, the cat crazies are out in force trying to stop this wholly rational and logical action.

The American Bird Conservancy announced a new study that feral cats prey on the endangered Hawaiian Petrel. Scientists might find it more challenging to seek out evidence of which bird species, particularly non-Arctic, island-bound species, are NOT preyed upon by birds. At the risk of sounding insensitive, duh.
