But this man turned out to have worked with the government habitat protection agency, which is why he stopped when he saw me birding. I had a very nice visit with his family — so nice that I didn’t get to do all that much birding. While birding along the highway, a younger man on a motorcycle stopped to talk with me.

Wandering Tattler

This was a family vacation and I had led my unsuspecting wife and son out onto the curving pier at Aquatic Park, overlooking San Francisco Bay, ostensibly to get a better look at Alcatraz and the bridge, but actually with half a mind to finding a Wandering Tattler. It was the bobbing action on the rocks that drew my attention to the bird.

My family and I were staying at the edge of a sand beach, facing a wide flat in a house charmingly named “Bone Ami.” The land sits atop limestone, beaches protected by the third largest barrier reef in the world. Besides, knowing that many of them could be on their way to the United States was half the fun!
