This year one pair of Pied Oystercatchers has once again proven to be able to raise young. They are one of the older pairs and they have raised several young over the years, but only ever one has been fledged each year. They are still grouped together with their parents and there is a short “peep” as I approach.

There had been a grader along the fence-line many years ago leaving a lower area that was very flooded and the raised dirt it had left behind was the perfect location for a pair of nesting Australian Painted Snipe. The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. When you look at Clements latest taxonomic spreadsheet, you get a sense of the depth of their relationships to each other and the world. In some ways, this is a puzzling chapter.
