Last CBC of the Decade

The very last Sunday of the decade heralded our final CBC – with group sizes limited to five persons. While investigating a roadside patch, a couple wasps nailed me on my neck and head – almost scrambling my mental tally of Palm Tanagers , a Grey-fronted Dove , and Shiny Cowbirds. Safe to say no species was left behind!

Back in June, I took “the road less followed”, instead of going to my reliably wonderful site of Laurelito, and investigated the woods beyond the small (but Morelia-adjacent) town of Santa María del Monte. This is a Scoliid Wasp , a family which includes some of the largest wasps in the world. NAB (Not A Bird) warning!

Emus and fences

They are also inquisitive, so if you observe some near the edge of the road and you want to gain their attention you can turn on your car indicators and they will often investigate rather than run off. There had been good rains the previous year and as a result of that there were numerous family groups. Emu assessing the fence.

Apostlebirds

We had last experienced this cheerful family of birds in Katherine in the Northern Territory over 13 years ago, so although the population is isolated there they had the same characteristics. They roam in family groups varying from eight birds upwards and have a certain confidence about themselves as they strut around the bush.

Isolation, a.k.a. Business as Usual

Before we got to our destination, I pulled the car over to investigate an almost deafening twittering. This extremely vocal member of the vireo family utters its rich warble incessantly from sun-up to sun-down but it rarely makes itself visible. These irruptive visitors to T&T always are a pleasure to experience.
