This species is rare, hardly ever observed, and severely understudied. EBird, for example, has a total of only 134 observations recorded (5 of them mine), and has only received 9 lists with photos of the species (4 of them mine). It was also a pleasure to get a picture of a Laughing Falcon , although from quite a distance.

Laughing Falcon. Each of the six species in Costa Rica sports beautiful plumage with green and blue hues highlighted with rufous tones, and several also have long, racket-tipped tails. Even though you know that you saw a Yellow-eared Toucanet and heard a Spectacled Owl the day before, you can’t really expect them on a rainy count day. Spectacled Owl from another day. On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

These large parrots are popular in the pet trade, and that’s a likely source of the population of this species on Trinidad. I had never seen a Peregrine Falcon soaring with Black Vultures before – interestingly enough I would later see the very same occurrence two days later on another part of the island. Fortunately, a few minutes later a Great Horned Owl pair did a duet for me from somewhere west of the platform and that was worth having gotten up while most people were still sound asleep. Osprey are nice but after awhile you wish one would be a different species. It’s lonely in the dark with no birds to keep you company.

The photo blind at Delevan National Wildlife Refuge gave me this close up of a Peregrine Falcon ( Falco peregrinus ). The auto tour route at SNWR even holds Great Horned Owls ( Bubo virginianus ). The snag at Delevan NWR not only attracts Peregrine Falcons but Red-winged Blackbirds ( Agelaius phoeniceus ) as well.
