In Costa Rica, even the super shy Slaty-backed Forest-Falcon is seen more often than the island pigeon with the snow-white cap. Owned and run by a local family, they treated us very well, even making sure that we had coffee by 4:30 in the morning. The Bat Falcon that joined us for breakfast. .

After we had our scope fill of that one, we ventured into the forest to lay eyes on a family of Spectacled Owls ! In addition to Scarlet Macaw and Yellow-naped Parrot , they included the likes of: Collared Forest-Falcon. A Black Hawk-Eagle called high overhead and another King Vulture was in the air but it was time for lunch.

Mealy Parrots made their presence known, and we were treated with excellent views of Blue-headed Parrot that flew into a tree we were already examining. Familiar, but beautiful regardless: Blue-headed Parrot Another small parrot species landed on a tree in the distance. Meanwhile, the forest edge was awash with birds.

The Latin species name of the Brown Falcon is berigora , which made me hope it was named for some colorful and potentially sleazy racist naturalist (you may have realized I like these stories, even though I am not a person who slows down when seeing a car crash). Unfortunately, berigora is just an Aboriginal name for this falcon.

Emus roam the open areas, and surprisingly, various parrots, lorikeets or cockatoos can be found in most any major grove of trees. We were picked up at the Christchurch airport by our family friend, Neville Blampied, who as it turns out, is an amazing local bird guide, disguising himself as a Professor of Psychology at the University of Canterbury. There was a family of Black-necked Storks that was initially a family group, but over recent weeks they have started to feed separately. The most common birds of prey along the Fitzroy River in this area are the Whistling Kites and Black Kites , but we have also observed Black-breasted Buzzards , Brown Falcon and Brown Goshawk.

The area was alive with birds once you stopped to look and the tall trees produced Australian Ringneck Parrots , Sacred Kingfisher , Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes , Little Corella , Budgerigars , Nankeen Night-herons and both White-plumed Honeyeaters and Brown Honeyeaters.
