Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill. The highlight again happened before we left the camp, a family of Crested Firebacks. Oh, there were Buffy Fish-owls.

Rufous-winged Woodpecker. Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua. This former aberrant wood-warbler is so weird, it has been given its own family. Owls (because they merit target status everywhere).

They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family. It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day!

I haven’t done any surveys, but I would bet my binoculars that images and stories of hawks attract more attention and adoration from birders and the average person on the street than any other bird family. Families do not hike up mountains to sit all day on pointy rocks to watch woodpeckers. Those cameras are aimed at hawks.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. an unhatched Red-throated Loon by Clare Kines Like Duncan, Larry Jordan had a difficult time picking his Best Bird of the Year but he eventually chose a woodpecker.
