Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. It is quite a sight to experience hundreds of Abdim’s Stork dropping out of the skies from seemingly thin air, to gorge on burnt or fleeing insects and rodents.

This was our first close encounter with a Barking Owl and we were not able to get close enough to get decent photographs without disturbing it further, so we satisfied ourselves with the visual experience. We soon came across White-bellied Cuckoo-shrikes and they are not found in Broome, but we do have the Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes there.

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. Little Black Cormorants and Australian Pelican. One interesting experience here was finding a baby terrapin on the road and picking it up to move it only for peter to call out a Common Iora , one of my two lifer families of the day. So the poor turtle got a bit of a shake around before I released him safely into a ditch. Next we drove to the local bird breeding centre.
