Magpie Geese breed near Broome once again

In the past, when we have had a lot of rainfall in the Broome area during our wet season we have had the arrival of high numbers of Magpie Geese. In 2017 the arrival of the Magpie Geese warned us of the high rainfall ahead and then they bred in the area. The Magpie Geese bred again in the Broome area during 2018.

A bit alarming, given the events of the last few weeks in Missoula, but after years of close encounters with chipmunks and ground squirrels I have finally gotten to have a pretty good idea of a rodent when I hear one. A loud chirp rang from the side of the mountain, and a handful of stones skittered down the talus slope.

Natural events in Broome

Australian Pelican Glossy Ibis Most of the Magpie Geese families have moved away from the highway now, but there are still some close to the fence-line. The next natural event was just after 5pm on Monday 17th when the ground shook. The temperature also dropped two degrees Celsius during the event.

Welcome Back Waterfowl at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge

The park even features a Welcome Back Waterfowl day when the community is encouraged to come out and learn about the ducks, geese, and swans that visit the valley – an event that usually occurs in early April but this year took place on March 24. As a result, early migration season is an excellent time to visit. Most welcome.

Masked Lapwings breeding at Derby airport

Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. The open plains are now busy with young Magpie Geese and numerous other waterbirds and the Sharp-tailed Sandpipers are busy feeding up before migration.

A flooded landscape

In Broome we have been getting some good isolated rain events recently. The Magpie Geese have dispersed from the previous area they were in, because it got too wet. The birds appeared to know they needed to move to and the Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks were flying away from the storm. Magpie Geese on the move.
