Air boats are not my first choice for aquatic transportation – being loud and generally disturbing to everyone and everything – but they did allow us to cover a lot of water very quickly. Perhaps most striking, a pair of Bald Eagles looked down on us from a snag, eventually spreading their large, dark wings over the water.

Another really good feature of Singapore is the excellent public transport system. House Swifts , Pacific Swallows , a Brahminy Kite and a White-bellied Sea Eagle soared through the sky. It is very easy to get around the island and it is also very cheap. Collared Kingfisher.

We also stumbled upon the largest of Africa’s owls, the colossal Giant Eagle Owl (more recently named Verreaux’s Eagle Owl ) and often heard its pig-like grunting both during the day and at night. Whilst African Fish-eagles are the daytime predators of all things watery, Pel’s Fishing Owls fulfill this niche at night.

The tiercels (young Peregrines) must deal with Golden Eagles, Ravens, adult Peregrines, and foxes; they must also learn to navigate the skies and make their own kills, luckily these skills appear to be innately learned. We were then able to walk down Upper Thomson Road and get public transport back to our hotel. Asian Glossy Starlings , Javan Mynas , Spotted Doves , Common Flameback , Pacific Swallows , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Common Kingfisher , White-bellied Sea Eagle and Red Junglefowl were soon on the list. Arriving in Singapore we soon collected our bags and got ourselves a NETS card for travel on public transport and to also use in supermarkets. The train system is fast and efficient and was our primary mode of transport. Due to the fact it was not yet 07:45am it was a S$1.09 There was something “not right” about it.

It is very easy to reach Olympic Park by public transport and the fastest way is to take a train from Central Station to Lidcombe and then you take a train to Olympic Park. You can still stay in a hotel there and you can use the facilities. Aside from that-you can go birding!

Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. There is always the chance of an over-flying raptor with Brahminy Kite and White-bellied Sea-eagle commonly seen. If you don’t get to spend it, you can use it on board, or change it back later. Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped. Some of these islands cannot be reached by any mode of transport except a long ocean crossing and some are well over a thousand miles from the closest human habitation. Almost as good as someone finding an aquatic eagle with gills that preys on lanternfish at the bottom of the ocean. That leaves us with the world’s islands.

As I moved in on a heavily camouflaged Crimson Rosella hoping to improve on the photo from the last visit I observed a glimpse of a Wedge-tailed Eagle soaring by through the trees. On other occasions we would encounter numerous caravans being towed or large trucks up to 54 metres long transporting fuel or cattle and we would wisely leave the bitumen if it was not a full width road and let the larger vehicles pass. It was an incredible time on the road and one which I will expand on over coming weeks. Red Kangaroos.
