Another really good feature of Singapore is the excellent public transport system. We encountered over thirty species of birds around the Singapore Sports Hub on each visit and the best location we found was close to the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Our trip to Botswana produced some great owl species besides the reclusive phantom, including some of the smallest and some of the largest owls in Africa. Whilst African Fish-eagles are the daytime predators of all things watery, Pel’s Fishing Owls fulfill this niche at night.

Arriving in Singapore we soon collected our bags and got ourselves a NETS card for travel on public transport and to also use in supermarkets. The train system is fast and efficient and was our primary mode of transport. Due to the fact it was not yet 07:45am it was a S$1.09 I will now skip forward to Thursday, 14th March.

We were then able to walk down Upper Thomson Road and get public transport back to our hotel. By the time we reached the Upper Thomson Road we had a spent three hours sauntering through the park and had a list of over forty bird species. Sign for Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. Common Gliding Lizard.

It is very easy to reach Olympic Park by public transport and the fastest way is to take a train from Central Station to Lidcombe and then you take a train to Olympic Park. View from the bird hide The main species present when we visited were Black-winged Stilt, Black Swan, Silver Gulls, Chestnut Teal and Black-fronted Dotterels.

A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well.

Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. My favourite site in Singapore is Paser Ris. Spotted Wood-owl.

Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped. Once again we referred to the Wildwalks website for another option that included using public transport, with a train being our preference. On other occasions we would encounter numerous caravans being towed or large trucks up to 54 metres long transporting fuel or cattle and we would wisely leave the bitumen if it was not a full width road and let the larger vehicles pass. It was an incredible time on the road and one which I will expand on over coming weeks. Red Kangaroos.

The most useful resource we have found for finding a trail to go birding along in the Sydney area is one called “wildwalks” and it is particularly good because it offers a wide range of walks of varying lengths and also using public transport. Peregrine Falcon. One unmistakable bird flew across the track and stopped nearby.
