It was the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department, calling to report a Bald Eagle standing “crumpled” in remote area near Wausau, Wisconsin. A waste truck driver had found the eagle, but was unable to stay with her until we could arrive. This eagle is not long for this world.”. We are off to rescue a Bald Eagle, kiddo!”

But occasionally people see it – especially when it’s a hard-to-miss bird like this Bald Eagle. She can land on a transformer once then, the next time, be killed when she brushes up against the jumper wire. Within walking distance of her house were a pair of Bald Eagles with two chicks.

The only wildcat I found was illegally killed by hunters during closed season. Photographed within Beljarica: five White-tailed Eagles by Snezana Panjkovic. Two hundred metres further on, two young White-tailed Eagles were soaring. Yet, the primary job of Beljarica is not to support eagles and otters, but to control the floods.

The tiercels (young Peregrines) must deal with Golden Eagles, Ravens, adult Peregrines, and foxes; they must also learn to navigate the skies and make their own kills, luckily these skills appear to be innately learned. Coyotes took carrion from young Condors and then killed the weakest ones. It’s not easy.

It is a fascinating world of swampy forests of willow and poplar, inhabited by Black Storks , White-tailed Eagles , Eastern Olivaceous and Icterine Warblers (above), among more than 200 other species. Backwaters are a hard place to explore. Yet, I never heard the splash of a beaver tail when it dives.

Anyone with more than a couple of hours to kill could easily make a quick birding foray out from the airport. Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. There is always the chance of an over-flying raptor with Brahminy Kite and White-bellied Sea-eagle commonly seen.

Some of these islands cannot be reached by any mode of transport except a long ocean crossing and some are well over a thousand miles from the closest human habitation. Almost as good as someone finding an aquatic eagle with gills that preys on lanternfish at the bottom of the ocean. That leaves us with the world’s islands.
