As the Red-Shouldered Hawk seen above screamed overhead, Acorn Woodpeckers not only treated themselves to the woodpecker feeder, they had to attack the sunflower feeders as well. As an adult Bald Eagle and a first of the season flock of Tree Swallows flew overhead, several birds were cleaning up underneath the feeders.

Here and there, spits of pale sand became playgrounds for families and dogs, or hunting areas for Great Blue Herons. We watched a Bald Eagle soar on the warm updrafts over the marsh, while another actually stood on a mudflat, looking for prey. A view of East Bay. These river areas of Northwest Florida always strike me as mysterious.

There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. Pygmy Cormorants are regular, occasionally a White-tailed Eagle and during cold spells, Goosanders.

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.

Orlando is so rich in roadside and overhead birds that I kept a list of species seen from the car which ran to 30+ on the first morning and included a Bald Eagle nonchalantly sitting on a street lamp by a Target store. This is not good habitat for a Redgannet ; I had to get out of line. What a show … er … show-off!

These mountains provide more forested habitat where we encountered another pair of Mountain Bluebirds and some Townsend’s Solitaires , although not the dramatic purplish Lewis’s Woodpeckers which nest there. Perhaps it was the promise of afterbirth that drew so many Black-billed Magpies to this side of the park.
