There’s Lynford Water, a scenic tree-fringed former gravel working that today is popular with Great Crested Grebes, Tufted Ducks and wild swimmers (yes, they even swim in December). They don’t like being disturbed while looking for the right seed, so should a Marsh Tit interrupt their feeding, they are quick to see it off.

But the Mexican Ducks say otherwise. Along with the Sedge/Grass Wrens Ignacio had reported, he had also posted some fine photos of a Great Horned Owl that had roosted on his property. I hardly ever see owls, except for Ferruginous Pygmy Owls , so this was another big draw for me. Boy, were my socks wet an hour later.

What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Anyway, enjoy the images and keep an eye out for odd ducks! Go check it out! Get yours today!

Sadly, one of the first birds that we saw was a recently deceased Barn Owl. There is only so much water that a bird can take and even the ducks appear to get a bit sick of constantly being wet! Cross the bridge and immediately turn right at the sign “ observação de aves “ Along the 7 km to Porto Alto there are many entrances but only the first one does not require a keycard. Merlin and Short-Eared Owl are almost a “dead cert” in winter. The only guaranteed sighting would be the Zitting Cisticola.

My former nemesis was the Masked Duck. As much as I looked for it in the right places, the pirate duck stayed elusive. These were some of those final steps to my lifer Masked Duck: A Distant Site. The most reliable spot for Masked Duck in Costa Rica is the site known as “ Las Pangas ” in the Coto wetlands.

The first stop of the morning: young White–tailed Eagle , right next to the road and several dozen Rooks around. The winter of 2014 is quite warm and the numbers are much lower, but the Opovo record, as counted by Vuckovic, is 250 owls. Long-eared Owls are irresistibly cute. And the citizens of Kikinda are justly proud of it.

Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge. The first part of the week, we parked the RV at a campground right on the water, of Dog Lake, 20 miles southwest of Lakeview, Oregon. There was a large population of Western Grebes on the lake.

A lot of owls look kind of like Muppets when they’re young, but there is only one Flammulated Owl. In North America best known as the name of a hawk that comes in different color morphs, but it also applies to the Ferruginous Duck , which is notably rusty only in the male’s plumage.

Not long after the compilation gets underway starting with the order Anseriformes , we come to Aix sponsa and the compiler asks – hopefully – “Any Wood Ducks?” Now, Wood Ducks are somewhat uncommon in eastern New York in winter and after an inevitable few seconds of silence, some smirking wisecracker pipes up with “Do wooden duck counts?”

That Common Redpoll at the Evodia Fields feeders, for instance, and the Northern Saw-whet Owl I finally found on my second trip to Forest Park. I’ve only seen this handsome, copper-headed duck once before, years ago – being in Montana didn’t help on that front – and from all accounts this bird was showing well.

Unfortunately we have only ever seen dead Barn Owls in the Broome area and one day it would be nice to see a bird hunting over the land. This barrier beach habitat is often where Snowy Owls , Horned Larks , Snow Buntings , and other winter birds find food and shelter and it also serves as nesting grounds for American Oystercatchers and Piping Plovers , both of which arrive in March. Several Eurasian (Western) Marsh Harriers later, two clumsy young European (Brown) Hares are hopping towards us and then, in surprise, suddenly stop right in front of the car, only to retrace their steps back. If you live near water, you can try some duck nesting tubes. I see them all over in marshes in Minnesota but I had never seen a duck use one. I didn’t think they were as agile as a wood duck, but apparently they can. But there are so many unique housing options out there and one even works well for urban yards.

Out on one of the rocks that were visible during low tide, a small group of Harlequin Ducks had gathered. Right after getting the anchor set, what to my eyes should I see, but several P urple Martins flying above the boat! My first surprise of the day came in the form of a great look at a Barred Owl, just sitting on an open branch.
