Later, Harry Fuller, President of the Klamath Bird Observatory, led us to an open meadow where we saw a pair of Great Gray Owls hunting in a meadow. I had enough time to warn my husband that it was headed our way and we ducked. This spectacular montane vulture reminds me more of a giant falcon as it cleaves the air on long wings.

Peregrine Falcon is certainly more elegant than Duck Hawk. And the use of Long-tailed Duck for a waterfowl whose traditional name I decline to type is a small, but real, improvement in the state of civilization as a whole. But it sounds so much more sophisticated to say Ouzel. Issues like taxonomy take the back seat.

Brown Falcons , a Brown Goshawk, Wedge-tailed Eagles and also a Nankeen Kestrel hunted in the general area of the pool and were seen regularly during the day. There were two young Whistling Kites in the nest this year, but on dusk they would stretch out and looked like they would soon be leaving the nest to explore the area.

This ABA Code 4 bird was found hanging out with some Wood Ducks in Missoula, conveniently enough, by Radd Icenoggle. This year produced the lowest lifer count since I started birding (just cracking 50 lifers compared to average of 500+ a year for the past 10 years) mostly due to the arrival of my son, William Falcon in April.

The fence-lines were also good roost sites for the many Whiskered Terns and the majority of the ducks in the deeper water were Pacific Black Ducks and Hard Heads. Whiskered Terns on the fence-line and ducks in flight. They were hunting across the plains and being rather successful due to the sudden influx of prey.
