.’ Gorman has read and distilled probably every research study ever written about Wrynecks or related to them; my quick count of the citations in the 16-page References section came to 295. I somehow knew right away that the bird I saw was a Wryneck. Practically every sentence is documented with these studies.

A great collection like that at the AMNH gives one an opportunity to study species and species relationships in a way that watching birds in the field cannot. Nevertheless, it necessary to combine field experience with museum experience to create a vivid and accurate image of a species.

I know from experience how accessible Dennis is, last year he helped me identify a damselfly I photographed in Costa Rica (Argia anceps, no common name). Species accounts are sequential, one running right after the other. This is an excellent landmark field guide that belongs in every naturalist’s collection.

Instead, in 24 hours (Saturday the 26th), I collected secondhand everything locally, and then friends brought clothing and other supplies from when their little girls and boys were newborns.
