Rufous Hummingbird Male in Northern California

According to Macauley Library’s migration map the overwhelming breeding activity for this species occurs north of the state of California. I guess we will find out as the eBird maps change in the future, but until then, here is another photo of one of the males hanging out here in Northern California.

Black-backed Woodpeckers and Forest Fires in California and the West

I didn’t know what species of woodpecker it was, but I knew it was just in the clearing on the other side of the road. Black-backed Woodpeckers are non-migratory, although there have been documented intermittent irruptions of the species outside their normal range. Click on photos for full sized images.

The Spotted Towhee – One of the Five Towhees of the West

Water Feature Visitors

Even though there are several spots where different species can take baths at their leisure, this male Lesser Goldfinch ( Spinus psaltria ) decided to evict a Ruby-crowned Kinglet ( Regulus calendula ) that was really enjoying itself! I also added a new surprise species to my yard list, a Northern Mockingbird ( Mimus polyglottos )!

Shearwaters from Shore

According to eBird, there have been approximately 270 species seen at the hotspot that includes the harbor. Off the coast of northern California, Sooty Shearwater are common and are seen on virtually all pelagic birding trips. I had the wherewithal to video a bit of the show (below) and here’s the eBird checklist.
