Lucky for me, these beautiful and unusual woodpeckers can be found nearly year round in the oak savannah along the road I travel daily.

Being a westerner — raised in California, and now living in western Mexico — I was perhaps most excited about the migratory birds that breed in eastern North America. I’m happy to say that the ones right on the other side of a low wall were not so large. Then, around 4:00 p.m., I liked their attitude.

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

Less momentous, though just as exciting for me, were my outings during a brief trip to northern California. An Acorn Woodpecker , looking elsewhere. Perhaps it was right. Week two, we enter the USA

The 9 th of February, This afternoon finds us in Bakersfield California, this time working on Plan C, as the trip took way longer crossing the mountains that I had figured. Mourning and Eurasian Collared Doves, House Finches and a couple of California Scrub Jays turned out to the bulk of what I could find. Might be a theme here!

Agave Honey

As I mentioned last week, upon my return last month from California, where I had birded a couple of hours each day, I was ready for a bit of a break. Then, to my right, I saw an enormous flowering agave plant. I’ll end with this Acorn Woodpecker , because, honestly, how could I not? That would be absolutely crazy.
