Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

I wondered, last August, how animals endure it — the tiny ever-pumping lungs of hummingbirds, the lungs of bighorn sheep shouldering their way up mountains, they must get filled with smoke too, right? They receive no protection, and are often destroyed by salvage logging as quickly as possible.

The topography looks like it is right out of an early John Wayne movie. Exploring one of the rugged, 4×4 side roads, my wife and I ran across a very nicely treed little valley that ended up against some steep protective rocks. After you pass the mine, things change quite a bit. There were several Phainopeplas as well.

Puerto Escondido is a small protected harbor that caters to transient boats, both fishing as well as sailboats. As we pulled down the lane to the marina parking lot, I was finally able to get that Ladder-backed Woodpecker that has been stumping me at every patch I was used to finding them. February 2nd. February 5th.
