Being a westerner — raised in California, and now living in western Mexico — I was perhaps most excited about the migratory birds that breed in eastern North America. This was only my fourth encounter with the species (all on the east side). Although, truth be told, this species does seem to be a rarity in Tabasco.)

Lucky for me, these beautiful and unusual woodpeckers can be found nearly year round in the oak savannah along the road I travel daily.

Plus a few truly difficult species. Sure, it is an introduced species in Germany. I do not have a life list for those birds I saw in my youth, 45 years ago, in California. Iberian Green Woodpecker, Madrid, Spain. Mexico has a good number of greenish or rusty Woodpeckers. Mandarin Ducks, Munich, Germany.

As I mentioned last week, upon my return last month from California, where I had birded a couple of hours each day, I was ready for a bit of a break. It was not a revelatory outing, but the species and photos were surprisingly good. Then, to my right, I saw an enormous flowering agave plant. That would be absolutely crazy.
