I managed to see 38 species that day, a pretty average number for a summer outing in my area. A week earlier I would have readily said this was a California Towhee. I submitted five checklists from four different locations yielding 44 species. As the Red-Shouldered Hawk seen above screamed overhead, Acorn Woodpeckers not only treated themselves to the woodpecker feeder, they had to attack the sunflower feeders as well. All in all, I tallied 44 species. Fun birding!

Although they were a yearly sight during my youth in California, I had only seen them once in all my years birding in Mexico. and Canadian birders: Brown Creeper , White-breasted Nuthatch , Hairy Woodpecker , and Sharp-shinned Hawk. Since I had seen neither species on my January visit to Lake Cuitzeo, these were year-birds.

On my last couple of visits, California Gulls, Ring-billed Gulls, Ruddy Ducks, Common Gallinule, Western Grebe, Eared Grebe and Pied-billed Grebes were on the water. It doesn’t seem to offer food or shelter for birds; but, being the tallest tree on the block, is an important stopover for lots of species. This small bit of arid land that has been set aside to display, and preserve the various species of cactus from this region is about a 45 minute drive from La Paz. Undoubtedly one of the most interesting aspects of Burney Falls for birders is that it is one of the few locations in California where nesting Black Swifts ( Cypseloides niger ) can be found.

The Red-breasted Sapsucker ( Sphyrapicus ruber ) and the Red-naped Sapsucker ( Sphyrapicus nuchalis ) were considered different forms of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker ( Sphyrapicus varius ) until 1983 when they were split into separate species.
