I’m happy to say that the ones right on the other side of a low wall were not so large. Then, around 4:00 p.m., I liked their attitude.

Butte Valley Wildlife Area and Meiss Lake

A few weeks ago I led a field trip to Butte Valley Wildlife Area. It was a destination I had never experienced so I made a few phone calls and got some information from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife agent who actually runs both the Butte Valley and the Shasta Valley Wildlife Areas, which are about 25 miles apart.

Lewis's Woodpecker in New York State

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Back in sunny Mexico

Last Saturday, I was walking around the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, on a cloudy, gray 28F morning. I was not surprised to see Ladder-backed Woodpeckers, Gila Woodpeckers, Cactus Wrens and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers , but there were a few species that certainly did surprise me. Ahh, what a difference a week can make!

So I asked seven wildlife rehabilitators, “Tell me your favorite (or one of your favorites) release story – the kind that makes you keep going, in spite of everything.”. “A But lets see … I’d say one of my most memorable releases is that of a Purple Martin , a species of special concern in California.
