Swifts are aplenty, one is likely to see Gray-rumped , Band-rumped , or Short-tailed Swift hunting insects each morning. Tufted Coquette Arriving here during the hours of darkness presents its own cadre of obstacles, however. To get around this, I either leave the afternoon free – or check in during the night.

The Great Bustard Search is On (1)

It is estimated that there were more than 1000 Great Bustards in the northern lowlands of Serbia at the beginning of the 20th century, but back then these birds were also present in the south and the east of the country. Habitat destruction combined with hunting has pushed them away from their former breeding grounds.

Another Endemic Amazona

Vincent Parrot began in the 1980s and have continued into the present. I had experienced this species in much closer quarters before, on a previous sojourn on the island in 2010 I paid a visit to a local breeding facility; I even went trekking sans guide deep into the forest without much success save for one or two distant fly-bys.

Hawking for Nighthawks

Striated Heron in breeding plumage – extra plumes and blue lores. Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Especially as we were at the time about to experience a rapidly advancing tropical storm. Great Blue Heron.

A few Barbets

Might have something to do with the fact that they were hunted here until quite recently). T he Blue-throated Barbet (Xishuangbanna and Baihualing, Yunnan, China) is probably the barbet species that is the easiest to see in Southern China. A late entry – just seen on Hainan in January 2022 – is the Chinese Barbet.

Evolution of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper

Or The Hunter Becomes The Hunted What am I talking about? After all, Shell-billed Sandpiper must be closely related so maybe we can get a captive breeding program going and then backcross the results later and save the spoonie? Or it was present sans shell. Or Why Eating Raw Seafood Is Dangerous Or Ouch! Great idea, no?

Mallards are a Threat to Mottled Ducks in Florida

These wild birds migrate out of Florida to northern breeding areas in the spring and are not present in Florida during the mottled duck breeding season. Mallards did not occur in New Zealand naturally, but were released to provide hunting stock. Mottled Ducks apparently genetically intact.
