Kirtland’s Warbler is a classic niche species; they breed in only very specific conditions, which occur in only a very specific area. this species breeds. They are often present on Laysan Island and Kure Atoll as well; a female-female pair on Kure Atoll have yet to involve a male in nesting activities.

With the proposed hunting seasons on sandhill cranes being discussed in Tennessee, Kentucky and Wisconsin, we must not forget the whooping crane, which travels and winters in the big sandhill crane flocks. I knew I’d never heard that before.

The Great Egret was in breeding plumage and courtship posture–bright lime green lores, head bending down and then snapping up, long, impossibly delicate plumes waving over its body as if possessed by independent spirits. I thought about those plumes and about how fortunate we were to be seeing this egret in all its glory.
