Great News! Feral Cats to be Removed from Plumb Beach, Brooklyn!

The National Park Service is finally going to remove the feral cat colony from Plumb Beach, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. After all, it takes courage to stand up to the cat crazies and he should be thanked for doing the right thing. Nature lovers, rejoice! Signs like the one above went up late last week.

Birding Tanjung Aru Beach, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. The Long-tailed Parakeet can sometimes be seen here feeding right next to the Blue-naped Parrot. The first one is the Blue-naped Parrot. Or US$ 8 for the pair below.

The first Pied Oystercatcher chick of 2020

Our first Pied Oystercatcher eggs for this year’s breeding season were laid early and were due to hatch last weekend. In the header photo the Pied Oystercatcher chick is only just to the right of the adult. Feral cats are also a problem in Broome. This offers a lot more protection than the exposed nest site.

Birding Singapore

If you take a feral pigeon, bleach it and then batik it using the right colors, the result might be a Pink-necked Green Pigeon (1). These birds on Pulau Ubin may well be Red Junglefowl (they have grey feet), but they may also be hybrids – apparently, there is a genomic continuum from feral to wild Red Junglefowl in Singapore.

Pied Oystercatcher chicks two weeks on….

It is quite common for several clutches of Pied Oystercatcher eggs to be laid during the breeding season and often within ten days of egg or chick loss. In the photo above there is one chick trying to avoid the wind under the vegetation to the right of the tail of the Pied Oystercatcher on the left. Pied Oystercatcher family.
