In my experience, people eat more food they are familiar with than food that is unfamiliar. This is not an issue here in Shanghai – I have only seen them in very small groups this winter. The Common Pheasants in Shanghai are all wild – there is no program of supporting the wild population by releasing hand-reared birds.

Just under a fortnight ago, I saw a report on the local bird alert of a sighting of a group of approximately 20 Nacunda Nighthawks at a wetland not more than 20 minutes from where I live. Especially as we were at the time about to experience a rapidly advancing tropical storm. We had no idea if the nighthawks would hunker down or flee.

These are bird groups that have been covered extensively by other guides. Armistead and Brian L. It is an intriguing choice of species.

In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. It did not take long before we had a family group of Tufted Jays right by the side of the road (KM 216) and an uncommon Gray-collared Becard at the same spot.

The Dry Tortugas National Park is located some 70 miles off of Key West in a small group of keys that makes up the farthest points included in the state of Florida, so it was no surprise that we had a four hour boat ride ahead of us before landing in the park. In the non-breeding season, male Baya Weavers sometimes enter the basket-making trade, often with considerable success. Meanwhile, the females seem to have a much more relaxing life, at least in this early stage of the breeding season. It very effectively forms a small foraging group in this manner. This year offered no change from the norm as a group of birders were able to find six male Eurasian Wigeons hanging out with a even larger group of Americans. Their population is currently stable among the arctic regions where they breed. In my experience, however, most salt marsh species are seen like this.
