In his first chapter, on the Raven, Moss is an enthusiastic borrower from Bernd Heinrich’s classic The Mind of the Raven , and in chapter ten (about which more below) a good deal is sourced from a 2022 book, The Bald Eagle , by Jack E. What claptrap.

One of the reasons I enjoy about reviewing books is the opportunity to read titles I wouldn’t ordinarily encounter, not because they aren’t good but because they don’t fall easily into a category. Lost Animals: Extinction and the Photographic Record by Errol Fuller is one of these books. I understand why Fuller created this book.

The Atlas of Birds: Diversity, Behavior, and Conservation – A Book Review

Be warned, The Atlas of Birds is not a map book, though it does contain maps, lovely orange and purple and green bird distribution maps. And, it is not a coffee table book, though it is on the large size (11 x 8.5) It is pretty amazing how much information Mike Unwin compresses into the book’s 144 pages.

Each one is worth exploring and for a full map of the area there’s no better book than Dave Gosney’s “ Finding Birds in South Portugal ”. Campaigns, nestboxes, surveillance – it all costs money. Pull over completely and only if you can. Better is to turn into the many roads to the left or right.

Just in Time: Kenn Kaufman’s “A Season on the Wind” — a review

So, yes, there’s plenty enough information about migration in the book to justify the subtitle. Kaufman is a terrific writer and A Season on the Wind is a terrific book. And dunlins (below), masters of synchronized flying, “convey the full rush of the season, the unstoppable drive that will take them on to the Arctic.”.
