Over the years I’ve seen a variety of open-country birds there, including Bobolinks , Vesper Sparrow , and American Kestrel. Over the years birding Willow Lake I had added nearly eighty eBird checklists at the preserve and netted myself 127 species, good for number two on the eBird hotspot list.

I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy. We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts. Baird’s Sparrow was one of those elusive creatures.

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

The Black-crowned Night Heron is a member of the heron family. The Chinese Blackbird is among the most common birds in our compound. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is another bird that is very common in our compound. Like many other birds, when it feels safe, this species likes to take a bath.

I heard Red-winged Blackbirds conk-a-ree-ing from phragmites. What a marvelous sight my seventh goose (and 313th species) for Queens was! It was another nice look but I didn’t linger as I wanted to get home and enjoy the rest of the day with the family. The morning wasn’t a total loss though.

Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well. Hes only been birding since 2005 but has garnered a respectable life list by birding whenever he wasnt working as a union representative or spending time with his family.

Barf at blackbirds. Spew at sparrows. Most of them are essentially telling you what species they are when they talk, so just focusing on appearance may make the identification process more complicated than it has to be. Their bills are obviously different lengths and shapes…they must be different species, right?

As I drove east through scenes of destruction that I can’t even come up with the words to describe, I was frustrated by the continuous flocks of birds going overhead – most were blackbirds but some, at least, were finches. Also, we saw a Blue Grosbeak , some Fox Sparrows , and both species of kinglets.

I chanced to glance at a bird perched atop the Oak tree in my back yard, figuring it was one of the Blackbirds or Grackles that had recently returned to my neighborhood. A trip to the coastal plain may net you up to seven species of warblers, from the omnipresent Yellow-rumps to Chats and Cape Mays. Instead I saw a flash of orange.

From 20 February through 25 February I was on a family-and-friends vacation on New Providence in the Bahamas. During our time at the Comfort Suites I made the one-block walk to the ponds seven times, four in the morning and three in the evening, and totaled forty-three species on those visits.
